Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) hosts an Annual Conference for its member programs to educate, empower, and connect them. The Conference is the place where Meals On Wheels programs across the countries learn to run their programs more efficiently, generating ideas for innovation, and inspiring them to keep up the hard work. After all, they are the people on the front line of the fight against senior hunger. The 2010 MOWAA Annual Conference is being held in Atlanta, Georgia, so the natural connection to make was between the famous fruit and our Senior Nutrition Programs. The collateral presented is a campaign to two different audiences, MOWAA Members received different communications than vendors. Along the way the peaches came to life and were subtly personified, some lead, others discuss. The light heartedness and bright design have excited attendees and exhibitors alike. We can't wait until August to see the materials really come to life!
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
Perhaps the biggest issue in any non-profit is budget. In this case, tons of information needed to be communicated, so information design and structure were fun challenges. We addressed this by placing a lot of information online or in further inquiries. The search for peaches in the middle of winter was quite a hunt. I probably looked at every single peach from Argentina stacked in a giant pyramid in Whole Foods, I was sure it was going to collapse at any point and I would have peaches rolling everywhere. Even more difficult than finding the perfect peaches was making them look like peaches. I went to a florist shop to find acceptable substitute leaves to pin to the peaches. They had jagged edges that had to be shaved in post production, and the peaches looked like apples for a long while due to dark coloring. Who knew that fruit would ever need so much hair and makeup styling?!
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
The 2010 MOWAA Conference Materials are catching people's eye and enticing them to learn more about how they will benefit from attending. The goal of the MOWAA Conference is to provide three days of learning, sharing ideas and best practices. The five subject areas in which courses are offered correspond to the five key areas of Senior Nutrition Program operation: Leadership, Nutrition, Development and Fundraising, Volunteer Management, and Communications. The Conference is not only an opportunity for attendees to network with peers and learn from experts, but also to renew their focus and view senior hunger from a national perspective. The Conference helps MOWAA to provide customized educational and professional development opportunities to equip Senior Nutrition Programs with the specific skills and tools they need to carry out their mission.
