Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
AAYC Quarterly is the newsletter of Arts Alliance of Yamhill County. Created to advise members of coming events, the publication has evolved into much more. True to our mission to "Nourish the creative spirit in everyone," the Quarterly is now a forum for discussion of the arts, plus ongoing features including Artist Spotlight, Emerging Artist, and our Poetry and Short Fiction page. Naturally for a newsletter, there is a calendar of events. We offer application guidelines for AAYC grants. After the fact, grant recipients are acknowledged, along with photos of their accomplishments. Often these are students in a classroom setting.
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
Art, in all it’s forms, fulfills an innate desire for self-expression and communication. Art makes us whole. It makes us human. But too often societal orientation or simply the demands of everyday life divert attention from art, leaving us with the sense it is foreign and unapproachable. As a consequence, not only is society poorer, but the artist is left feeling even more isolated in an endeavor that is solitary by nature.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
AAYC Quarterly addresses both problems through a variety of art-related articles, including guides to art education and art appreciation events. We stress that art, both its production and enjoyment, is within everyone’s reach. With the "artist profiles" we put a human face on the work, providing a platform for established artists to showcase their expertise, and emerging artist to gain much needed exposure.
