Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
Arts Umbrella is a not-for-profit arts education centre for 2-19 year olds in Vancouver. Our year-end Expressions Festival of the visual and performing arts provides our students with the opportunity to take pride in their work and share it with friends, family and the greater community. The series of events celebrates the accomplishments of our students from all disciplines, age groups, social circumstances and cultural backgrounds. For the Show Your Impact contest we are submitting the promotional material produced, using Adobe Creative Suite 4, to promote and celebrate the 26 performances and exhibits that take place as part of the festival. With the support of Techsoup and Adobe we were able to purchase the software to creatively produce the poster and handbills to innovatively promote our multidisciplinary programming in visual, media, dance, music and theatre arts, showcasing the work of more than 1,600 Arts Umbrella students.
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
Previously, it has been an issue to illustrate the variety of artistic disciplines and levels, from pre-school to advanced training, in the Expressions materials. It is essential to showcase all our students’ effort, doing their talents justice, as for most this is their first experience of public presentation. The ability to extract images from their backgrounds in Photoshop adds to the professional quality of the pieces. As well, the line drawings created in Illustrator convey the subject of the event, allowing the main graphical elements, the light dots and visually impactful teal to remain prominent. The designs were built in InDesign, which provided a seamless template and employing a single colour space ensured all pieces, regardless of production, would be accurate and consistent. These factors contribute greatly to our ability to celebrate the students’ work as a valuable element of their learning and participation in the artistic community.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
It is heartwarming to witness the children’s hard work and talents culminating in a final performance or exhibition, seeing them become more confident, reveling in their personal successes and building a life-long interest in the arts. Using the technology available in Adobe Creative Suite 4 we have been able to build a model to easily interchange images relevant to each performance but maintain the Arts Umbrella Expressions branding throughout the six week festival. Therefore, we have been able to solve our previous issued and successfully: • celebrate the accomplishments of our students from all disciplines, age groups and backgrounds • share the excitement and enthusiasm for the children and the work we do • maintain a sense of identity and to increase awareness by showcasing all programs • acknowledge the public and our sponsors for their support • increase attendance to almost 6,000 people
