Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
This display banner is used to promote Building Value at presentations and trade shows and help explain the organization's goals and give a brief overview of the business while building and maintaining the Building Value brand. Building Value, a nonprofit social enterprise of Easter Seals Work Resource Center, is a building materials reuse center and deconstruction service that provides funding for Easter Seals WRC and job training to people with disabilities and/or come from a disadvantaged background. At a glance, the message of Building Value is often complex and difficult to tell. This banner was needed to convey the environmental message of the organization while also encouraging shopping at the store and explain the community benefit of Building Value. This piece was created entirely using Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat and was reproduced as a "pop up banner" at 39.5" x 83.5".
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
This banner was needed to give a professional snapshot of Building Value, especially at trade shows, when often visitors either do not wish to speak to someone or the staff member is unavailable. The story of Building Value is often misinterpreted as a rehab company or as just another social service. The Building Value quality and environmental impact are often overlooked - especially when someone is taking only seconds to gauge whether or not they would like more information. The banner needed to convey the overall branding message of Building Value and create interest among potential supporters and customers.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
This piece helps to tell the story in a quick and clear fashion and also maintains the branding integrity of the recently reworked website: www.buildingvalue-cincy.org. The display banner's inaugural event was the Cincinnati Home and Garden Show. Many of the show visitors stopped to read the banner and then had questions. In years past, most of these individuals would have walked by. The banner shows the scope of products at the Building Value retail location and gives a glimpse into the overall community impact of the organization - while being professional enough to encourage supporters of the organization. Through the artwork, photos and overall design, the banner helps people visualize the new concept of a social enterprise like Building Value that is a nonprofit organization but also a business. It helps them see how all work together to provide a community benefit.
