Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
Our submission is the Fall 2009 issue of our quarterly newsletter called CASA Connections. The newsletter covers past and upcoming training opportunities, articles on subjects important to children or child welfare, special recognition of volunteers and achievements of the CASA/CASA Kids program. We integrate the informative text with graphics that at times are critical, thought provoking and/or humorous. We really want people to read the information and therefore focus on an easy-to-read layout and graphics that catch the eye. Our newsletter distribution list expands each quarter. We are able to email a digital version to the majority of our subscribers. Currently, it is distributed to over 100 community agencies, financial supporters and political leaders and 125 copies are sent to our current active and inactive volunteers.
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
Our program advocates for abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system due to no fault of their own. To do this we must recruit, train and retain quality volunteers. The problem was that many potential volunteers in the community had never heard of the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) or knew how we helped children. Another issue we faced was finding an effective way to let our volunteers and other community agencies know about upcoming training opportunities, special recognition and the needs and accomplishments of the CASA/CASA Kids programs.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
The option of producing a newsletter seemed like the perfect fit to address all these issues. But we wanted a newsletter that looked professional and could easily be distributed digitally and in print. We were so thankful to Adobe and TechSoup for the opportunity to purchase the Adobe Creative Suite 4 at an affordable price. With these tools we were able to produce a professional, informative newsletter that not only allowed us to build relationships with community agencies and keep volunteers informed but we also reached potential volunteers. With the Adobe products, not only was our newsletter professional, it offered us the opportunity to create innovative, eye-popping graphics that helped us express the message. We use the Adobe products for many things include fundraising advertisements, transferring court documents into digital files, business cards, letterhead and so much more.
