Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
This piece is a flier to publicize our litter pick-up program in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Troy Hill. Before I accepted this position, our "marketing" left much to be desired. I have a degree in graphic design and am able to provide our organization with a modern, unique approach to marketing at no additional cost. I enjoy having my pieces out in the neighborhood for all to see and I get compliments on them frequently. This program in particular runs most of the months each year (April through November), so this piece will be around town for four months. Then I change it up and design a similar but different piece for the remaining four months. I feel that this method helps people realize that someone does care about the neighborhood and is watching out for their best interests.
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
Our organization has designated one Saturday morning per month to removing litter and cleaning up dump sites. We clean the city stairways and public right of ways for pedestrians and bikers in our neighborhood. We have an event scheduled to get the children in our community more involved and informed as well. The Adobe Creative Suite and this flier are an intergral part to marketing the program. We have fliers posted all over town and so it becomes recognizable as something that we are constantly doing and will continue to do to make our neighborhood a better place to live.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
I have been designing these pieces since June of 2009 and each month we receive a few more, or different, people to help clean up than the previous month. The poster is becoming more recognizable to residents and reminds them of the clean up dates. We have many more people to reach and always need more folks to get involved, but this piece is helping us get there!
