Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
In order to express thoughts and showcase the artists, a booklet was created and distributed to our members and to the general public. The 24 page booklet contains images of the work shown and an essay written by the director/curator. "Detritus Ecologies", the gallery' 2010 spring exhibition, shows how we take waste, the occurrence of our excess and turn this into artistic statements, thought provocative projects that raise awareness to the tragic amount of stuff our lifestyle(s) generate. This piece was innovative for the organization because it allowed us the space and medium to be more verbal on the critical issue of waste. Due to time and budget constraints, the compact booklet was easy to create, print, mail out and carry.
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
The piece was originally created to fulfil the gallery' mandate. Each year, we present a stimulating array of solo and group exhibitions of Canadian and international contemporary artists working in all mediums. We also offer services and professional development opportunities to artists, curators, writers and critics. Commitment to artists and their work is our first priority. SInce 1979, we continue to present the visual arts in every form through its exhibitions, published monographs and catalogues. With the addition of new staff and new equipment, we were ready reach a wider audience. WIth "Detritus Ecologies", the exhibition had universal appeal to all groups; be it age, gender, ethnicity or religion. In hopes of widening our public reach, the booklet was sent to all our contacts and media outlets.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
The exhibition booklet is eye catching, easy to transport and contained interesting substance for the reader. The exhibiting artists were glad that we created a quality booklet to showcase their work and ideas. We were then contacted by a local TV station; the reporter even had the booklet in hand! Following the TV spot, we saw our attendance increase substantially.
