- Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
- Girl Scouts recently asked girls what matters most to them and the overwhelming response was the environment. In response to this impassioned reply, Girl Scouts developed and launched Girl Scouts Forever Green. Girl Scouts Forever Green is a large-scale project where girls will discover themselves, connect with others and take action by implementing a project that benefits both the environment and their community with lasting, sustainable change.
This piece serves as a guide to help girls start their Girl Scouts Forever Green Project. Since Girl Scouts Forever Green is all about the environment, the Project Guide was designed to be primarily emailed and viewed on the web. With that in mind, we used InDesign CS4’s various features to create a PDF that contains bookmarks, hyperlinks and text anchors to make the document extremely user-friendly. As our audience for this piece is mostly girls, we used Illustrator to create fun, colorful backgrounds.
- What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
- With this piece, we were looking for a way to create a fun, cost-effective, environmentally-friendly piece that was able to contain all of the information girls would need to start their project. We also wanted to ensure that it was easy for our members to follow and use. While ideally the piece would not be printed, we knew that members may want to print the area of focus on which they choose to work. Therefore, the piece needed to be in a format that could be easily printed when necessary.
- How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
- This piece has allowed us to reach our members in an environmentally-friendly way while avoiding expensive printing costs. The bright, colorful design gives it the fun feel for which we were striving, and the use of hyperlinks and bookmarks makes it easy for our members to view the various resources provided in the guide. Since it is a pdf, when members need a section printed, it is very easy for them to do so. Our members have been extremely impressed with this guide and are excited to start their own Girl Scouts Forever Green project.
