Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
As the nation of Sudan prepares for a vote to permit the south to separate from the north, John Oryem, a local writer has also led the organization of South Sudan Writers into formation of Southern Sudan Writers' Association. To help John, we have arranged to have his works published as print on demand books and have prepared a website dedicated to Literature for the New Sudan: www.sudanlit.com This includes his book, Amna's Tears. (We used Dreamweaver and Photoshop, although the website was created from a free template.) This is innovative as the first literary voice from an area where the population has endured North Sudan's cruel genocide for years. Today the United Nations is giving hope that these people can be free. This hope, as well as the dark past, is seen in this emerging literature.
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
Helping indigenous writers in an area where new freedom lies ahead, despite memories of terrible genocide.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
We were able to give these writers an international voice. The website will continue to serve them as the new Sudan develops.
