Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
Children Awaiting Parents (CAP) is a nonprofit organization that recruits permanent families for youth who have been waiting longest in our country’s foster care system. We believe that visible children stand a better chance of finding homes. The mini CAP Book is the ideal print vehicle for showing communities and individuals in our country, the faces and stories of children who wait. The mini CAP Book measures (in inches) 5.5 x 3.75 (5.5 x 7.5 when open). The mini CAP Book is innovative because of its pocket size, its ability to be distributed easily, and its appeal to a number of different demographics including but not limited to adoption agencies, potential parents and individuals researching adoption. It has been used to inform, educate and recruit individuals to become permanent placements for these youth. The mini CAP Book is distributed everywhere from small hair salons to national adoption conferences.
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
We are a small but national nonprofit organization limited on professional resources. Our youth’s availability is always changing and our ability to update and inform the public is crucial. We created the mini CAP Book as a way for people to learn more about the children and easily share the information with prospective adoptive families.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
The mini CAP Book is small, able to fit in one’s purse or pocket, and allows us to show individuals, families and caseworkers a number of children who are waiting to be adopted. It shares our mission, addresses common myths that prohibit people from exploring adoption, and shows the faces and stories of those children who wait for their permanent family. We believe the mini CAP Book’s original, convenient size and personal message make it noticeable, and allow it to stand out from brochures and literature that might otherwise be overlooked. In the year that the mini CAP Book has been in existence, Children Awaiting Parents has seen a noticeable increase in inquiries from caseworkers and families. We are grateful to TechSoup and Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat, InDesign, Photoshop) for providing us with the tools to create a visual piece that will help us to find forever homes for our waiting youth.
