Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
Our creative piece is a video of photos and video of 2010 collegiate and high school spring break volunteers who participated in the building of a new Habitat house in Sisters, Oregon. It’s innovative because we used new media (youtube video) to get the message to our target audience... the segment of the population that is most likely to see it on youtube.
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
The issue that we were addressing in this video is the need for young people to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. Many of the current Sisters Habitat volunteers have worked with Habitat for years and their knowledge needs to be passed on.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
Young people coming together to work with our more experienced builders is a great way to preserve the knowledge about building decent affordable housing we have gained over time. The video shows students coming from Minnesota, Idaho and Sisters to volunteer during spring break to build with Sisters Habitat for Humanity and how fulfilling giving back to the community can be. By recognizing their efforts and showing how much fun they had, we hope their peers will see the benefits of volunteering and want to join in as well. Most of this year’s students have committed to doing it again.
