Describe your creative piece – what is it and what has it been used for, and why is it innovative?
116 page, 4 color book containing the history of the Women Divers Hall of Fame, 176 member bios, personal stories and photos, along with category descriptions to educate people unfamiliar with the many areas of diving as well as a list of diving pioneers . This book was created to capture the history of how this prestigious group came into existence and is being used to raise awareness of the Women Divers Hall of Fame as well as raise money for our scholarship and training grant program through donations received from the distribution of the book. People who have received copies of this book are in awe and spellbound by the stories of these incredible women who have broken barriers, set records, made scientific discoveries and continue to do so. All writing, editing, design, layout and production on this book was donated by members. The only cost incurred was for printing.
What issue or problem were you working to address with this piece?
The Women Divers Hall of Fame wanted to record their history as well as the stories and biographies of all of the members and in doing so, make it accessible to the public to broaden their awareness. This book is also an excellent resource for young people just entering the field of marine science and oceanography, as well as young people in general to acquaint them with the ocean and all it holds. Plus advertising sold as well as donations received from the distribution of the book has increased our scholarship and training grant reserves. We currently offer 4 scholarships and 9 training grants yearly to individuals wanting to pursue marine science and oceanographic careers.
How has your submission successfully impacted your organization’s ability to solve this issue/problem?
The reception of the book, by the Women Divers Hall of Fame membership, the diving community and even non-divers as well has been overwhelming. The scope of the project far exceeded expectations and the material in the book truly makes it a keepsake piece. Plus, the quality of the book as well as all of the information and photos it contains have made it a piece that many members have sent to family and friends, increasing its reach tenfold. In addition to the history of the organization and the members' stories, there are a number of underlying messages to be gleaned from it as well: that you can do anything you set your sights on, that the ocean is a vast frontier to be explored and enjoyed, and that our ocean is fragile and needs protecting as well as the many creatures that inhabit it. By the extensive distribution of the book, we are creating the awareness desired, as well as increasing our scholarship and training grant reserves.
